The “Strykio žuvys” Arctic char farm is a modern fish farm located in the port of Dreverna, in the Klaipėda District, near the King Wilhelm Canal. The farm raises Arctic char (Latin: Salvelinus alpinus)—a freshwater fish of the salmon family that inhabits cold, crystal-clear waters. It is the only freshwater fish capable of surviving in both cold and warm waters.
The farm uses a closed-loop recirculating aquaculture system (RAS), which allows for effective water quality management and minimizes environmental impact. This technology ensures fish health, reduces the risk of disease, and enables fish to be raised without antibiotics or hormones.
Alpine char has a mild, not overly fatty flavor and a firm texture. It is an excellent alternative to salmon and is particularly valued for its nutritional properties: it is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins B12 and D, selenium, and phosphorus. This fish is suitable for a variety of dishes: frying, smoking, stewing, soups, or even eating raw.
“Strykio Žuvys” offers not only fresh fish but also educational programs where visitors can learn about the fish farming process, observe fish being raised, and discover the principles of sustainable aquaculture. It’s a great opportunity to learn about food production and environmental conservation.
The educational and entertainment program “Strykis – The Illegal Fish Market” is a journey through the history of the Curonian Lagoon, the lives of the fishermen of Dreverna, and the legendary Strykis Market, which operated for nearly 300 years. This educational program invites you to explore fishing traditions, cultural heritage, and modern fisheries all in one experience.
