Discover the Dreverna Crafts and Leisure Center—a place where ancient crafts, music, and the daily life of a thousand years ago come to life. Here you’ll see jewelry, clothing details, and everyday tools from the 1st–12th centuries, recreated based on archaeological finds. Candlelight, wooden dishes, linen, and furs create an authentic atmosphere that makes you feel as if you’ve traveled back in time.
In the educational area, you’ll see how fabrics are woven, wax candleholders are molded, clay pottery is shaped, and wooden objects are carved—all just as they were done in ancient times.
In the “Food 1,000 Years Ago” educational program, you’ll learn about 9th–12th-century cuisine and taste dishes recreated according to historical recipes. A long wooden table will be set with a rye bread cake with mushrooms, rabbit with lentils, black peas, cabbage rolls, pressed cheeses, and other dishes enjoyed by our ancestors. You’ll learn about the significance of food in the community, in rituals, and in everyday life.
The Ancient Plant Garden, located near the center and shaped like a Viking ship, is home to about a hundred species of ancient plants. Here you’ll discover which plants ancient people used for food, medicine, and rituals—from pepperweed and black caraway to burdock root, ancient carrots, barley, and sage.
The museum space at the Crafts Center offers a glimpse into daily life from the 1st to the 12th centuries: people’s clothing, customs, household life, and rituals. Visitors can touch the fabrics, try on recreated jewelry, or make a simple household item themselves.
Educational programs take place here year-round. Families, travelers, and school groups visit the center, and every visitor discovers their own connection to ancient culture. During the warmer months, the center comes alive with open-air events—ranging from historical music evenings to craft workshops.
