4. Wood Pigeon

Size: Crow-sized (L38‒43cm)

Life expectancy: 15‒17 years

Distribution: 70 000‒120 000 pairs

Breeding: Nests in forests, parks and even avenues of trees. May build a nest on top of another bird's old nest. The nest is a thin but dense tangle of branches. Sometimes eggs can be seen from the bottom of the nest. Both members of the pair participate in the building process. Breeds up to three times per season. Usually 2, sometimes 1 egg. Both parents incubate the eggs. It takes about 17 days. The young begin to fly after 29‒35 days.

Appearance: The largest representative of pigeons in Lithuania. The body is reddish-brown, the back, wings and head are bluish-grey, with black tips and a black band on the tail. When flying, the white crescents on the neck and wings are clearly visible. Pink feet, legs without webbing between the toes.
