14. Redshank

Size: Like a pigeon on stilts (L24‒27cm)

Life expectancy: 21‒26 years

Distribution: 400‒600 pairs

Breeding: Breeds in meadows and other grasses near water. Nest on the ground, well-hidden in tussocks or grass. A nest is a depression covered with native plants. It is built by a female. The Redshank lays eggs once. Usually 4, sometimes 3, and rarely 5 eggs are laid, which both partners incubate for about 23‒24 days. The chicks leave the nest shortly after hatching. In the beginning, both parents take care of them, then only one of them takes care of them for another 30 days.

Appearance: Reddish gray, heavily spotted, with a white belly. Bright underwings are visible in flight. A white shaped spot on the back all the way to the striped tail. The legs are bright red, the toes extend beyond the tail in flight, and there are white triangles on the trailing edge of the wings. The beak is long with a black tip and a pink under-bill.
