9. Skylark

Size: Starling-sized (L16‒18cm)

Life expectancy: 9‒10 years

Distribution: 400 000‒900 000 pairs

Breeding: Breeds in open habitats without trees, natural meadows, dunes and high marshes. A nest is an insignificant depression covered with finer grasses, less often hairs, next to a tuft of plants. Often the nest is visible, but may become overgrown with grass during migration. It is built by a female. The Skylark breeds two or three times a season. Lays 3‒4, sometimes 5, in exceptional cases 7 eggs. The breeding time is about 11 days. The young are fed by both the male and the female. The chicks leave the nest after 9-10 days before they can fly. They begin to fly well only after 20 days.

Appearance: Grey-brown, dark-streaked. On the head there is a short, blunt ponytail and fuzzy eyebrows. Light-colored legs with a long rear claw and a long yellowish beak.
