7. Corncrake

Size: Starling-sized (L22‒25cm)

Life expectancy: 5‒7 years

Distribution: 23 000‒30 000 pairs

Breeding: Breeds in fertile, moist grasslands. Their nest is on the ground. It is a small platform lined with dry grass. The corncrake hatches once a season, laying 8-12, sometimes 6-14 eggs. Only females incubate the eggs. It takes about 15‒18 days. Young are cared for by either both parents or only the female. Fledglings leave the nest shortly after hatching, but are fed by their parents for another 3-4 days. Later, the young of the corncrake become independent. They begin to fly after 5 weeks, but are fully feathered only after 7‒8 weeks.

Appearance: The bird is more like a dinosaur, as it is more often heard than seen. A brown belly. Sides of the body with dark brown stripes. It has dark spots on its back. A short beak with a long neck and long pink legs. At first glance, it seems that it is wingless and often runs, but it flies perfectly when necessary.
