8. Lapwing

Size: Pigeon-sized (L28‒31cm)

Life expectancy: 23‒24 years

Distribution: 12 000‒15 000 pairs

Breeding: Breeds in open habitats - meadows, pastures, swamps with low vegetation and moist peatlands. Breeds in pairs, occasionally sparse colonies. The nest is rotated on the ground. The male chooses several possible nest sites, and the female chooses the most suitable one. During the season, peewit hatch once, but if the eggs are lost, they are replaced by others. These birds usually lay 4, but sometimes 2, 3 or 5 eggs. Both the female and the male are involved in incubating the eggs, but the female is more likely to do that. The transition takes about 24‒29 days. The young become independent after 33 days.

Appearance: It has a short black beak, black top with a long tail. The sides of the head are white, the wide black collar, the belly is white, the under-tail is bright brown, and on a sunny day the back shines with green, purple and blue glittering feathers. Legs are red with webbed toes. The tail is white with a wide black band.
