Birds on the Baltic Sea Coast

Nature along the Baltic Sea coast is incredibly diverse – featuring wide beaches, tall sandy clay cliffs, forests, bogs, lakes, and rivers, providing favorable living conditions for various bird species.
In Lithuania, 412 bird species have been observed so far, while in Latvia, 377 bird species have been recorded, of which approximately 220 species nest locally.
Significant research is conducted at the Ventes Ragas Ornithological Station in Lithuania and at the Pape Ornithological Station in Latvia, which is the field research base of the Institute of Biology of the University of Latvia. These stations catch, band, and study birds, recording and investigating their migrations. Bat research is also conducted in Pape.

Birdwatching locations in Klaipėda region
There are seven locations in Klaipėda region where people can go birdwatching. These are Ventė Cape Ornithological Station, Aukštumala Raised Bog, Dreverna Observation Tower, Tyrai Marsh Birdwatching Tower in Kliošiai Landscape Reserve, Dovilai Quarry Ponds, Plazė Lake Birdwatching Hut, and the Great Cormorant and Grey Heron Colonies in Juodkrantė

Liepāja
Lake Liepāja and the surrounding meadows are included in the "Lake Liepāja" nature reserve and it is Natura 2000 protected area of European significance due to its importance as a nesting and migration stop for waterfowl. The lake hosts 27 nesting, 10 wintering, and 50 protected bird species that feed here during migration. Lake Liepāja is listed as an Important Bird Area in Europe, with over 100 bird species observed in total. Bird diversity reaches its peak during the spring and autumn migration periods.
Lake Liepāja is the only lake in Latvia that does not freeze over completely in winter. During this time, a large number of birds gather in and around the open water patches. The main species include mute swans and whooper swans, with a smaller number of wild ducks, tufted ducks, smews, goosanders, Canada geese, and other waterfowl. Predatory birds such as white-tailed eagles, northern goshawks, and sparrowhawks can also be seen nearby, looking for an easy prey.
Observation towers are the best place to watch birds on Lake Liepāja.

The coastal landscapes of the South Kurzeme region vary greatly along its 96 km stretch. From the gentle dunes and pebbly beach sections near the village of Nida to the changing and, in many areas, steep coastal cliffs near Ziemupe and Pāvilosta.
