3. Meadow Pipit

Size: Smaller than a sparrow (L14‒15.5cm)

Life expectancy: 8‒13 years

Distribution: 30 000‒60 000 pairs

Migration: Breeds in open areas, coastal marshes, dunes and wet meadows, high marshes. The nest is well hidden on the ground, often right next to the clumps of plants. A bowl-shaped nest made of dry grasses and other plants, lined on the inside with bristles and other plant material. They usually breed twice a season. Usually 3‒5, less often 7 eggs are hatched. Only the female incubates for about 11‒15 days. The young are fed by both parents. Meadow Pipit leave the nest after 14‒16 days, when they do not yet know how to fly well.

Appearance: Greenish grey, body sides and chest uniformly striped. The beak is thin and dark, with a yellow base of the sub-beak. The legs are dark, while the back is motley.
