Making pizza dough is a great way to learn about yeast, bread-making and the circle of life. Yeasts are small, single-celled creatures that live all over the earth. When we select the right yeast, they eat the food we give them and start to grow. What happens when our children eat too much? They belch, just like yeast, when they get full of the sugar they eat. The gases they release cause the dough to expand, causing the crust of bread or pizza to rise. Once the dough is in the oven, the yeast dies and we can eat delicious bread.
It is often said that cooking is an art and baking a science. We can mix ingredients to create different flavour combinations, but if we leave out an important ingredient when baking, our recipe will never work.
Try interesting experiments by making small portions of dough without salt or yeast. What happens to the ingredients? Will they make a tasty pizza? Even ingredients that are not measured correctly will result in a crust that will not bake properly.
The importance of preheating the oven and setting the correct temperature is emphasised when making the right type of dough. You will learn what happens if the oven is too hot or too cold during baking. Once the oven is properly heated, we will put the pizza in and observe what happens.
