One of the most picturesque corners of the Klaipėda Region, with its undulating path carved by one of the largest tributaries of the Minija River – the Veivirža River and the Šalpė, Šlūžmė, Upita, Purlė, Judrė and other streams branching off from it.
The renewed valley of the township is a great place to take a walk, breathe in the fresh air and get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Since 2020, the Veiviržėnai Culture Centre has been organising en plein air called ‘Doors’ for painters, during which the rich history of the township is depicted on old wooden doors. The compositions of painted doors testifying to individual historical facts are installed on or next to the most important architectural objects of the township. However, the majority of them can be found in Veivirža Valley by descending to it via a route past the church of St. Matthew or from the central Market Square of Veiviržėnai. When stopping for a moment on the hill, you will be greeted by a great panorama of the bend of the river, and when you go down the oak stairs, you will find a secret of impressive size (2x6 metres), which tells a unique legend of the township. Walking along the path, on the left side, you will see the result of the plein-air activities of several years, and, on the right side, a pond with a glow-in-the-dark fountain.
After crossing the Love Bridge near the Veiviržėnai Hillfort, you can try the 50-metre-long Barefoot Trail on the left bank, ending at the Veivirža River. On a hot summer’s day, it serves as a great refreshment for both the old and the young.
As you continue, you will arrive at the Labyrinth, where the compositions of the doors painted by artists depict the past, present and future of the township of Veiviržėnai. Having crossed the river on the Magdalena Bridge and following the riverbed along its right bank, you will reach the Daubos Špyga and find a great place for a picnic, equipped with a shelter, swings and outdoor grills.
During the summer festival, cinema nights are organised in the valley of the Veivirža River, where you can watch movies under the open sky right from your car. Concerts are held there as well, attracting spectators from all around.
In the centre of the township, you will find stands with QR codes that will help you find other routes around the area.
