The Boletus Stone stands as a monument to honour the planting of Dumpiai Forest in the early 20th century. The stone is engraved with an inscription in German: ‘Plant a forest, even if you don’t know who will one day dance in its shade. And remember, your ancestors planted it for you without knowing you. Planted in 1917–1928 by C.G. Hildendorf.’
On the side of the ‘stem’, the following is carved: ‘Kr. K. Bajorai 1934.’ Kr. K. means Kretinga Prison.
The monument was conceived by Heinrich (1900–1979), the son of C. G. Hilgendorf, the owner of Dumpiai Manor. In 1934, he was imprisoned for his political activities at Bajorai Prison, known for its stone-carving workshops.
