Border Guard Captain Ipolit Davidovich Melech (1825–1870) monument

Trips

The monument on the Border Guard Captain’s grave is a significant representation of the period of Lithuania’s occupation by the tsarist Russian Empire in the 19th century, which perfectly reflects the historical topicalities at the border zone at that time and probably has close connections with the phenomenon of booklegging (Lith. knygnešystė), which came into existence in 1864–1904 when the Lithuanian press in Latin characters was banned, and which was of a great significance to Lithuania.
