In August 2016, Darius Stončius, a resident of Vilnius, discovered a Curonian hillfort in the Seaside Regional Park (Lith. Pajūrio regioninis parkas) between the village of Kukuliškės and the Dutchman’s Cap cliff, which is popular with visitors. Dr Gintautas Zabiela, an archaeologist, claims that there were settlements near the hillfort and that the hillfort itself may date back to the late Iron Age – this information is based on pottery shards found on the site. According to the archaeologist, this hillfort, which is not mentioned in written sources, will make us reassess the history of the Curonian Spit. This is the second hillfort discovered on the coast so far. Following detailed archaeological research, the site of the hillfort is going to be added to the State Register of Cultural Heritage Objects and adapted for visitors.
