During World War II, the German occupiers murdered most of the Jewish population. This is commemorated by a monument at the site of the massacre, near the Gargždai bus station, with an inscription in Lithuanian and Jewish: ‘At this place, in July 1941, the Nazis murdered hundreds of Jews from the town of Gargždai and the surrounding area’.
