In 1989, at the approaches of Gargžda Park, a cross ‘In Memory of the Nation's Pain’ was hallowed. During the solemn ceremony, the Day of Mourning and Hope dedicated to the memory of the victims of the mass deportations to Siberia that the Soviet Union started on 14 June 1941 was commemorated for the first time.
Within the 1941–1953 period, approximately 2,402 inhabitants were deported from the 11 elderships of the Klaipėda District. For many years, they were forced to dwell in barracks unsuitable for living and subjected to hard slave labour in the remotest regions of the USSR.
