The longest breakwater in Latvia – the Northern Breakwater – was built at the end of
the 19th century as a crucial part of Liepāja’s fortress and military port. The
breakwater is 1800 metres long and 7.35 metres wide. It is a popular spot for locals
to watch sunsets and fish in the sea. The views are especially striking when nature
displays its power in stormy seas.
At the Northern Breakwater, you can spot birds such as the herring gull, the great
black-backed gull, the red-throated loon, the great knot, and others.
