The Southern Breakwater lies north of Liepāja’s central beach and plays an important
role in protecting Liepājas port. The Baltic Sea along the coast of Liepāja rarely freezes over, making the Southern Breakwater a great place for bird watching in
winter, as waterfowl tend to concentrate there. Rare wintering bird species such as the oystercatcher and the rock pipit have been spotted near the breakwater. In recent
years, a colony of great cormorants has formed at the end of the Southern Breakwater near the sea gate.
