Lifespan: 23-24 years
Breeding: Breeds in open habitats: meadows, pastures, marshlands with low vegetation and wet peat bogs. Peewits build nest on the ground: the male selects several possible nesting sites, and the female chooses the most suitable one. Peewits breed one time per season, however, if the eggs are lost, they lay new ones. Usually, these birds lay 4 eggs and, sometimes, 2, 3 or 5. Both the female and the male incubate, but the female takes care of it more often. Incubation lasts 24 to 29 days. The young become independent after 33 days.
Appearance: A short black bill, and black crown with long crest. White sides of the head, a wide black collar, white belly, and bright brown coverts of undertail. On a sunny day, up-close, the back has an iridescent green, purple and blue sheen. The legs are red with non-webbed toes, the tail is white with a wide black stripe.
