Lake Durbe and the surrounding meadows are an important habitat for birds to nest
and feed. The area is a feeding ground for large numbers of migrating geese, and
nesting has been recorded for several protected bird species, such as the corncrake,
bittern, and shoveler, etc.
Lake Durbe is one of Latvia's oldest and shallowest lakes—a valley-blocked lake with
an average depth of approximately 1.3 meters and a maximum depth of 2.5 meters,
covering an area of 670 hectares.
There is an observation tower on the western shore of Lake Durbe, that offers a
panoramic view across the lake. In 2025, a landscape binocular will be installed in
the tower, ideal for viewing both the scenery and birdlife. Nearby lies Latvia’s smallest
town, Durbe, known for its small-town charm and rich history.
