SECTION DESCRIPTION:

The section of the route from Kartena offers a chance to unwind and escape the hustle and bustle of city life. The soothing flow of the river and the serenity of the forest and meadows will accompany you for much of the hike, leading you all the way to the town of Kretinga. Continue along the winding path of Pastauninkas Park until you reach the Church of the Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary, which has stood in the heart of the town for 400 years. The church is renowned for its Franciscan tradition, as well as its rich historical, artistic, and woodcarving heritage. This church stands as a testament to the final establishment of Christianity in Kretinga. The centuries-old palace always extends a warm welcome, and the Franciscans will offer you a place to stay.

Before resting, however, it’s worth visiting the Kretinga District Tourism Information Centre, which is located near the church. They'll give you the pilgrim’s stamp and plenty of information about the must-see sights in the Kretinga region.

One such place is located right next to the church. This is the Lourdes grotto built between the wars, a replica of the French Lourdes. People say that prayers at the grotto are incredibly powerful, and the spring hidden there is believed to possess healing powers. The Old Kretinga Cemetery is just as powerful. As you leave the town, you'll notice a small yet unique chapel in the cemetery on the left side of the road. The famous botanist and monk Jurgis Pabrėža, revered as a saint, rests beneath its graceful arches. People come to his grave to pray for recovery from illnesses. On the opposite side of the old cemetery stands the neo-Gothic chapel-mausoleum of the Counts Tyszkiewicz. It is the eternal resting place of the founders of Kretinga Manor, the Counts Tyszkiewicz.

Kretinga offers three places to stay, so we invite you to rest and recharge, readying yourself for a new day filled with adventure.
