12. Stragnai chapel-mausoleum

The chapel-mausoleum is a unique object, probably the only one of its kind in Lithuania Minor. It is surrounded not only by the meanders of the Minija River and the beauty of nature, but also by secrets and legends. It is a monumental tomb marking the place of burial and commemorating the memory of the deceased. They are usually rectangular or round in shape, with spaces for an urn, sarcophagus or coffin. Decorated with architectural and sculptural elements. This historically, memorially and architecturally valuable object of cultural heritage is distinctive and exceptional not only in the Priekule district, but also in the whole Klaipėda region. The restoration of the chapel-mausoleum has revealed and highlighted the most important valuable features of the object, revealing the cultural value of the cultural heritage object.
The chapel-mausoleum on the hill has solved many mysteries for historians. It is not known who built it for deceased wives. Maybe Bronacki, or maybe the courtier Mittelstet. Apparently, he wanted his beloveds to be closer. There was no Catholic cemetery in Priekulė, because there were only a few Catholics here. It is too far to bury them in Klaipėda. We invite you to this historical detective story too!
