13. Vingis Park

The present Priekulės Vingis Park was planted at the beginning of the 20th century by the landlords Šperberiai. The scenic Vingis Park is situated in a picturesque loop of the Minija River and covers an area of 13 ha. The park is carved by a system of paths. One of the main paths winds along the bank of the Minija River. The Vingis Park in Priekulės was a popular venue for events organised by the ""Vilties"" Society.
The park is decorated with wooden sculptures of historical themes created by folk artists. Many old, mighty oak, lime, ash and maple trees have been preserved here. The Priekule or Poserna Oak, which is about 400 years old, is exceptional. The trunk of the oak is 4.70 m long, 1.5 m in diameter and 25 m high. In 1960 it was declared a natural monument, and in 1987 it was classified as a monument of republican significance.
It is said that Poserna, the Ammon Poserna of the Priekulė Knightly Manor, had an iron noose in the fork of this oak tree, with which he used to honeycomb serfs. This great oak tree was uprooted in 1993. A new oak tree has been planted in its place, protected by the old oak tree lying nearby.
